Hello my fellow nurses, I just applied to the spring 2019 southwest college nursing program. Does anyone know how long would it take to get an invite to take the TEAS 6. I really need to get in this program. It's time to level up from this LVN title.
I was there when the reps from the BRN had spoke to us about our current curriculum and all those issues in your post were addressed by the students. Our Director of Nursing has already started the implementation of an updated curriculum which is required by the BRN every 5 years, and this year was is that year. It's not perfect, but overall I feel it is a good school. My wife graduated from there and is currently a tele nurse at MLK making good money. The professors are good. I've learned a lot and they are fair, but you also have to do your part studying too. There is an insane amount of reading, but I couldn't tell you how the new curriculum will be implemented. Our clinical sites include California Medical Center, Kaiser West LA, Little Co Mary and Centinela. I did my med surg at Kaiser and Little Co. OB and peds at California. In my cohort 4 have dropped and are repeating medsurg. You are allowed to fail a course once and repeat, but you can not fail the first semester at all or you will be dropped an unable to reapply to any laccd school for a year. I was accepted to Cerritos and Lattc, I chose Southwest partly because my wife had gone there and lecture was once a week plus clinical hours.
Good point - where can I find the graduation rates for different schools?

Thank you so much for your reply, I've been researching non-stop since being accepted which school I should go to, it's such a tough decision. One more question, are A's attainable in your program? SMC posts their grade distribution online and for some professors, it seems only B's and C's are given and literally 0 A's in any given semester. This kind of worries me because I'd like to go into a MSN program in the future and I know grades do matter quite a bit depending on which field you go into (especially CRNA).
Also, are you working while in the program? How many hours can you put in without sacrificing your performance in the program?
An A in our program is 92% in any class. I've managed to work full time and receive a couple of As, but mainly my grades were in 85-90%. If not working isn't an issue then an A is definitely attainable. It also helps if you have experience in the medical field. Our school also has bridge to BSN programs with CSUs, Charles Drew, and University of Phoenix, which you go to there school in the summers toward your BSN. A number of my co workers had less than desirable grades in RN school but managed to further their careers with BSN (my wife included) and MSN with no real issues, so I guess it the school you plan on going to.

Without any experience in the medical field, I'd say don't work at all. If you had to, maybe just the weekends, because the reading alone is brain overload.
thank you, that is very helpful
I will save your number! I'm also worried about the intent to close. I kind of want to ask about it during the orientation but don't want to be annoying :/ lol
I called today and asked and they said that i shouldn't be worried because they doubt the program will close. Just seeing that on the BRN website though makes me so nervous. I'm going to have to stick with southwest because I didn't get accepted in any of the other 4schools I applied to. LAHC, LAVC, Rio Hondo and LACC
