Hi. I'm new to this site. I have been an L/D nurse for 3 years. I was hired on straight out of nursing school. I love L/D. It IS my passion in nursing and I can't see myself doing anything else.
Recently I was accused of being a prescription drug abuser by my charge nurse who is known for being a bully and causing many nurses to leave or getting them fired. I decided to take matters into my own hands and speak to the unit manager.
Four days later I was fired for not following policy and procedure. They said I had not wasted controlled medications correctly. I have always been so careful with my medications and wasted them appropriately. But in L/D I could see where I could have possibly given pain med and not charted it...but if I didn't give it I always wasted it. Giving pain medication in an emergency may have been forgotten, but if I've got a 4th degree repair that is bleeding and I'm assisting the Dr. and calming the family and documenting the newborn I could see that happening. So...
I've put in for other jobs at another hospital but they didn't have any openings in L/D. I was called today for a neuro position, but am unsure if I should take it. I would have to work that position for a while before I could transfer.
I don't know what I should do. On one hand, I think it's good to broaden my horizons but on the other I know what I love to do! But I can't wait on L/D forever, I need a job. And I know that there is an opening due to come up in June. But what if they don't hire me for the spot then I've waited for nothing?

It's unfortunate that you got fired for that, but as I've read around stuff like that is not uncommon in the workplace associated with nursing. I think you should accept the job in neuro and in June when the L/D position opens, apply for it and see if you get the job. If you don't, you'll still have the neuro position to fall back on.
This response is kind of late because I'm always in the pre-nursing student section (I'm a pre-nursing student). Sorry :)
