Ku bsn program class of 2013!

I was just accepted to KU's Nursing school as well! I've been looking on KUMC's housing ads for roommates, but there hasn't been very many posted yet. Do you know if KU has any sort of orientation (aside from the one in August) before school starts so we are able to meet other nursing students? These next two years are going to be so great- I can't wait!

I haven't heard of anything yet, but I sure hope so! I'm going to start looking for an apartment in a couple of months. The area isn't so great but I hope I can find a safe place to stay at least for the first year. If you're interested we could exchange emails and keep each other updated.

Hi,

I don't mean to be nosey or anything but I am going into my sophomore year at KU as a pre-nursing student and was hoping you guys could give me some tips on getting into KU's nursing program. I am most nervous about my GPA and if you guys wouldn't mind sharing I am just wondering what GPA's you had when applying. Thanks!

No need to feel nosey, I know exactly how you feel! My only advice would be to maintain a GPA higher than 3.6 (I had a 3.8 when I was accepted), obtain quite a bit of experience in health care before you apply, and to have some volunteer experience. For the health care experience, I worked as a physical therapy tech at a rehab hospital and also volunteered at Health Care Access Clinic in Lawrence as a Clinical Assistant- which I recommend that you do too! That staff is amazing and you really learn a lot, especially about providing health care to the uninsured. As for other volunteer experience, I didn't have much other than a few times volunteering at Jubilee Cafe. I think they focus more on how dedicated you are to the health care field. And as for grades, it's also important to have your highest grades be in science classes. Other than that I can't think of anything right now...When I get a chance, I'll look back at my admission essays and can let you know what kind of questions they ask. Yes, any information you could give would be amazing. I'm in an LPN program now but am very interested in eventually applying for KU's RN-to-BSN program. Did they give you any kind of scale of "points" they'd award for your application based on individual criteria -- GPA, work experience, etc,?

I messed up my GPA when I first came to college in 2004-2007 pretty badly, I'm hoping that the time off and the change in major, coupled with the fact that all of my nursing pre-reqs and my allied health (CNA, CMA) classes have been As except for a B in A&P (which I need to retake anyway because it was 5 hours instead of 8) will show that I'm ready to take it seriously. Of course I'm striving for a high GPA in my LPN program but can't really say much about it given that the classes don't start til next month.

I wasn't very dedicated to school the first time around but am completely committed now, I just hope I didn't completely mess up my chances.
