Im working on a nursing care plan with my nursing label being. Deficient Knowledge in care of JP drain. I need two etiologies. My first one I have is lack of exposure secondary to new condition. For the life of me I cannot come up with a second one. My pt was willing and interested in learning, had to cognition problems and when taught, had no problems. I was thinking of using lack of information provided but I couldnt come with with a "secondary to" for that. If anyone could help give me some ideas that would be great. Thanks so much!

You can look at it a few different ways...why is this patient needing information? He had a procedure, right? So your NANDA would be something along the lines of "Knowledge deficit r/t surgical wound care secondary to mechanical interuption of skin barrier" etc. Sometimes I have to look at these things backwards and work my way forward. You just have to think about the WHY part... good luck!

if you looked at the taxonomy information for deficient knowledge (specify) you would have found a list of etiologies you could choose from for this diagnosis.

  • deficient knowledge in care of jp drain r/t lack of exposure secondary to new condition
    • the problem with this is you have added "secondary to new condition" to the etiology when your subject of the learning is "care of the jp drain". which subject is it you are focusing on? the care of the jp drain or the new condition?
    • what do you mean by lack of exposure?
    • use "lack of information" and "unfamiliarity with information resources". after all, how would the patient know what a jp drain is or where to go to find information about it?
      • deficient knowledge in care of jp drain r/t lack of information and unfamiliarity with information resources aeb [your evidence]
