My husband and I are considering his being stationed in Hawaii. What is the nursing climate in Kauai, particularly for LPNs? Also how is commuting, can you commute? Is the pay comparable to the cost of living? Thank you to all who respond.

You might want to check the local news---Wilcox has told the striking RN's that all the LPN's are going to be fired.
Not a good time to be a nurse on Kauai, RN or LPN.
Here is an article written by a pediatrician who practices on Kauai:

It is true that Hawaii Pacific Health, the healthcare corporation that runs Wilcox on Kaua'i, Kapiolani Women's and Children's and Pali Momi on O'ahu, is trying to make the nursing staff all RN-ADN as a minimum, but whether that will happen is anyone's guess. This raising the bar for entry level nursing is being fostered by our own professional nursing organizations. That said, the strike is still on, the usual rumors are flying about, pay is about the same as what is paid in Metro New York area outside of NYC, but it snows a whole lot less. And yes, drive slow. The traffiic is more like a rumba line than a jam.
Curious---do you work at Wilcox? Any new negotiation sessions planned?

Hi thanks for asking about conditions before coming, I'm one of the RNs on strike(106 days now) The LPNs have been terminated So they have gone to other facilities. This would not be the best time to look for a job. There are LPN jobs in Long term care and home care. Good luck!
