I am interested into looking into L&D work for an agency in KS. Someone told me I'd probably have to sign a contract vs per deum as L&D is something I'd have to "prove" myself in. Are the jobs available in KS? Can I keep a part time job and work around it? I am too scared to give up the security right now. Any information would be helpful. Thanks.

L&D isn't my thing, but I know that the agency I work for does a lot of L&D and Mother/Baby stuff with HCA/Health Midwest in the Kansas City Metro area which includes two of the biggest "baby factories" in the area on the Kansas side.
I work for Cascade and have been really happy with them, but there are a ton of agencies in KC (like 60+ I believe).
Keep in mind you have to go through orientation classwork and orient at each facility you want to go to if it's an HCA facility which is a pain, but the hours are there for sure.
Good luck!
Thank you very much for your reply. Through reading on this board and another it seems like I might want to stay away from HCA hospitals. I guess I am spoiled where I am at. Have you noticed this? Which KC hospitals are HCA?

Funny you mention that. I too was not a fan of HCA coming in. Originally the facilities under the HCA umbrella were members of a regional corporation, Health Midwest. HMW was a pretty good company, and if you look back on some of the anti-HCA posts you may very well find some mudslinging posted by yours truly.
However, I actually have noticed several positive changes since HCA came in. I am not supporting the things they have done in other areas, but the KC HCA facilities are actually a pretty good place to work agency at. They seem very different from the HCA I have known in the past for whatever that's worth.
I stand corrected for a lot of things I said about them.
To answer the rest of your question, I think there are maybe 15 HCA facilities in the greater KC metro, though really only two hospitals on the KS side, Menorah and Overland Park Regional. I've worked at both and have generally been pleased with the conditions (Menorah especially, is a very nice hospital, beautiful inside and out). The people are pretty friendly as well, though I have had a run in with a snotty nurse a couple of times at Overland Park Regional (don't let that turn you off though, it was on a tele unit).
If you are seeking L&D or Mom/Baby on the Kansas side, HCA is about the only option I think you'll have agency-wise. They also are the highest paying for agency. L&D is considered specialty right? If so, I think you'd be looking at $36-40 an hour based on what I make for specialty shifts.
If you go to Cascade tell them Eddy sent you, so I score some brownie points. :kiss
