70K possible for a Toronto nurse?

Hi all,

I am hoping to start by BScN at U of Toronto this coming fall. (I actually started a couple years ago, but realized a few weeks into it that I didn't want to take on any more student debt, so I quit and went back to work). Anyhow, I am a bit better off financially now, and really hate my career (banking), so think it's time to give it another shot. I make about 75K now and am worried that I will never again be able to attain that as a nurse. Is it possible? (I do have an MBA, which I hope will help). I'm not in this for the money, but still need to survive! As we all know, TO is not a cheap place to live, and I don't have a spouse or parents to rely on.

Any thoughts? Thanks very much.

Well if you can make $70K in Montreal i sure haven't found that job!!! I guess a career in banking is not really exciting but trust me nursing is nothing like on the TV..much much worse especially here in MTL. In MTL a RN starts at roughly 30K and can go to just below 50K and thats it. Unless you have a BScN you can make up to 60K or a little more...really does suck...sure if you work overtime as an RN you can make more but with the short staffing trust me...your happy to leave when your shift is done. The BScN nurse don't get OT pay..

I understand dressing for the corporate life is tough!! the clothes have to be up to date and you need to look chic! Scrubs are cheaper ...but really think about getting another job in your field ...stay at that great salary....

Are you ready to work many many years in a non gratifying job to make less than you make now

Think about it....................hard!!!!

where are you applying?

i've applied to uft and york. i'm leaning more toward uft because i did my undergrad at york and want a change of environment. considering the high level of applicants this year to both schools, i'll be thrilled to get in to either one. initially i was only going to apply to york, because uft application process seemed time-consuming. i've been out of school for 2 years and having to get in touch with a academic professor to submit a academic reference form, seemed like a headache. not to mention the personal statement requirement. however the whole process wasn't as bad as i thought it would be. what schools have you applied to? or applying to? do you intend on continuing work when you get accepted? do have a particular area in nursing you intend to specialize in?

I really wish you luck...and hope you will be happy with your decision. I remember many years ago applying to school..it is a hassle..but if it's your dream go for it girl!!! I am very happy doing in home training for specialty drugs..no school for me...looking forward to retiring...actually got at least 20+ years before that happpens. :chuckle

I only applied to U of T. I did my MBA at York and like you, need a change. I also live close to U of T, and don't want to have to make the trek out to York every day--too much of a lifestyle change, plus I have a pug who needs attention at the end of the day. My best buddy! As for the academic reference @ U. of T, the nursing school just told me to use a work reference, as I have been out of school for 10 years. One thing I learned last time I applied to York is that their application process is a bit disorganized and I don't get the impressions that they have enough staff in the office to keep the process running smoothly. If I get accepted, I won't be able to keep my current job, but I will have to find part-time work. I figure the first semester I will not work, and just focus on getting re-adjusted to student life, and then after that look for something. The financial aspect scares me a lot. When I was accepted to U. of T. three years ago, I won one of those bursaries on their website, and I was really pleased, but it was only $1,200, which doesn't really go far. You should apply for them though--can't hurt!

As for specialization, I think I would like labour and delivery. What about you?

oh I love pugs....they require alot of emotional support and love.

I think that your best bet would be to go to U of T..closer to your baby

I am sure you can find a part time job in banking....just to help you out financially...i truly wish you luck in your future endeveours... Specialize in something that you love,,,life is too short to do something that your not happy with....:nono:

easily obtained here in BC - after a couple of years you will be at top level for a nurse and with O.T. you can easily make 70,000 in the first year

Try private clinics they pay a lot more! starting at $40/hr.
