Just started Med/Surg but something else came up. Move?

Hi everyone!

I just got a job in Med/Surg a few months ago. I'm a new RN and this is my first hospital job. The job itself is ok although I never wanted to work in med/surg. I strictly went to nursing school to eventually become a nurse midwife. I don't hate it but a position in my dream specialty just became available and they're taking new nurses without experience. The job is at a different hospital so that means I'd have to resign. I'm not sure what to do. I'm grateful for having this opportunity but I'd much rather work on a mother/baby unit. Jump ship or not? Advice?

I think if you interview and are offered a position in mother/baby, then you can resign. In this fickle market don't throw away a guaranteed job for a job you hope to have. Unless you don't need a paycheck?

I would stay and get the med surg experience. Does your hospital have the mother/baby area that you can eventually transfer in?

I agree with the previous poster... apply for the job, interview, if you get an offer then resign. But don't quit just because you are applying.

Agree that you shouldn't quit until the offer is on the table. If it is your passion, follow it. It is rare to get into a specialty floor unless you have experience... so if that's L & D, ED, ICU, even if you're new, take it and don't be scared to ask a lot of questions. Good luck!

If this is the specialty you want to do, then go for it! However like others have said, don't quit this job until you get an official job offer. Just because they're hiring new grads without experience doesn't mean they will hire YOU. I'm not trying to be cruel, but realistic: if word is out that they're hiring without experience, I'm sure they're swarmed with applicants and you will have a lot of competition.

Also, should you get the job...expect that leaving this job so soon may burn a bridge, but still try to leave on the best terms possible.

Thanks so much for the advice! I think I'll stay with my current job for now. I do like the people that I'm working with and I'm getting that very valuable Med/Surg exp that may very well come in handy at some point in my career. I know that I won't stay there forever and unfortunately this hospital is pretty tiny and they don't have a mother/baby unit but I'm ok for now.
