Just got my first CNA job!

Published

Am very excited and happy and humbled at the same time that i got my first nurse aide job. It with a hospital in the cardiovascular unit. The HR lady called me and told me the pay and the night shift differentials and all that. I have read a lot about differential pay and all that but I cannot seem to get a very clear picture yet. I am trying to look it up on various sites but could someone break it down for me please? I am not very smart money-wise,like I just want to understand my pay-cheque better this time.

Thanks everybody!

Grats on the new job!:w00t:

Differential pay is additional pay for working on either night shifts or weekends. This can be due to the lack of staff who wants to work those hours so the hospital is willing to pay more to get staff.

I'm pretty sure this is it, but correct me anyone if I am wrong.

Also CONGRATS! It sounds like a great place to start. Many of us are truly blessed.

thanks you guys :) I am very happy but I don't want to forget that I am blessed and lucky to have found someone who was willing to give this newcomer a chance.

I think I know the basic idea behind differential pay and thank you for explaining. Just that the HR manager told me something about how if you worked between a certain number of hours in the evening or night I would get the differential pay. That confused me. I will be working 7pm-7am. I guess I will just need to do some more research too.

Congrats! I just finished my first two shifts at the hospital as a CNA (with no prior experience, either) and absolutely LOVE it. Good luck!

(And yes, differentials are a set amount for certain shifts like nights and weekends that are paid in addition to your base pay. So for example if you normally make $10 an hour and a weekend differential is $2 then you'll make $12/hr during that shift.)

Oh, and for weekends the differentials usually start at some point on Friday night until the end of day shift on Sunday, I think.

thanks for replying sentimentalGeek !

I think I got confused by that part but you know what, I am going to ask those questions during orientation or just be alert when they discuss this.

Congrats on the job!:w00t:
