Just change your major.

First off I want to say how's everybody doin? I've been lurking this forum for weeks and I've witnessed how people here help each other. It really impressed me so I decided to share my situation.

I'm a student who didn't get into the nursing program because my GPA is not that high. (Just an average 3.0) Sadly in CUNY, if you're GPA is not that high enough, they're gonna tell you to change your major. Heck, my friend who has 3.6GPA wasn't accepted. I have taken all the "key-courses" (A&P1, ENG1, etc) and all the other pre-requisites (ENG2, PSYCH2, A&P2, etc) already. I'm lost. It's like I really want to be a nurse but there's this big wall that I still need to climb. I have applied to 'another' CUNY school as a transfer to try my luck but they said that I my chances of getting into the program is nearly 0%. Quoted from her: "you could just change your major since you'll just waste your time and money here." I don't really have any financial support from my family that's why I cannot afford to go to a private school. If I had a choice, I would've left CUNY long time ago since I've been in one for 2 years now. I've been tempted to change my major a lot of times already. With my GPA, I could get into any program, except Nursing. I've never change my major since I really want to be a Nurse. My situation is really frustrating, it just shows that life is unfair:crying2:.

I just hate CUNY and how their system works. I applied to another CUNY school just try my luck there but was told that any "key-course" that I repeated will not be accredited. I took A&P1 twice, I got a W grade on my first one but A on my second try so that's a no-no. I'm losing hope.

Just to emphasize that I have taken all the pre-reqs for almost any nursing school. I even took nutrition and ethics. I'm tired of CUNY and their "no second chance policy." I am not changing my major. I'm sticking to nursing and just loan my ass off in a private school.

Thanks for reading my vent. That made me feel a lot better.

Maybe my post is going to be a little bit of a rant, but this purely GPA based admission policy angers me too. Where I am located there are a ton of nursing programs and not all of them structure around pure GPA. I was really immature at a younger age, and I destroyed my GPA royally by not withdrawing from two classes and receiving F's. Should I pay for that for the rest of my life? Will some 19 year old with a 4.0 and no life experience make a better RN than me?

Granted I know these are very random generalization and I know that alot of younger people are just as prepared to be an RN as anyone. Ten years later from my misspent youth I'm a really focused student. My grades during the program reflect that and I'm glad my school doesn't base their admission on strictly GPA. The nursing school I'm currently in only requires a 2.5 GPA, and any higher will not get you in any quicker. They have a list of things you must complete such as take the NLN, take all your prereqs, take a health related math test, etc... The first 110 people that have all of those requirements completed and have a 2.5 GPA get an admission letter and that's it. It's strictly a first come and first serve basis. Alot of people do get admitted and then weeded out when the material gets tough, but at least they get a fair chance. Some of these individuals who are weeded out happen to be the 19 year olds with the 4.0 GPA from highschool, and us older geezers might take it a little more seriously :)

I would like to thank every one who posted and shared their insights.

Moving out of state is definitely my last resort since like i said I am not financially stable hence the CUNY. I would love to move away from this city/state if I had an option (seriously).

I badly want to pursue this career since I know it's the right one for me (It's what I want to be). I was on the right track 3 years ago. I grew up in a foreign country and after graduating in high school, got accepted in a nursing school and took BSN. After a year in that school, we had to move here due to personal/family reasons. And, when I moved here I just lost it. I realized I messed up when things got messed up already. (It was hard for me to cope up with the new environment and new people.. but now it's all good)

I am already listing all the possible schools that I will most likely apply to for this spring '10. I'm considering Beth Israel, Lichson, LIU, Adelphi and the list is still growing. I've made a Nursing Essay and already know someone who might be willing to make a good recommendation letter. Anyone know other colleges that are cheaper and have lesser competitions? Should I even consider SUNY or is it just a 'carbon-copy' of CUNY? :banghead:

I'm also considering LPN (or even PTA) if things don't go according to plan. Does talking to a counselor/advisor helps at all? I talked to two counselors I think 1.5 years ago. They both said to look for another school, take a career counseling course (why would I even waste my time/money on that class when I already know what my major's gonna be). After that I never talk to a counselor again. I believe people in this forum is doing a better job than the counselors in my school.

Have a great and awesome weekend everyone. and THANKS. :)

I would try SUNY since they are a little cheaper than private school. Make sure you get a full acceptance into a nursing program before you move. I say no to no more BS schools for you. Goodluck!!!!

My friend graduated from CUNY hunter with a BA then she did the accelerated program at SUNY -binghamton. She charged it all on her credit card. She is crazy. But she has a good job now in NYC in Manhattan. Try that school. I think they also have traditional two year nursing program which leads to a BSN. I know SUNY-Downstate is a pain in the ASS. They are no different from CUNY when it comes to nursing. Try SUNY-Stony Brook.
