Rhabdomyalgia of more of a symptom.

  • rhabdo - rod
  • my - muscle
  • algia - pain

Literally, it means "pain in the muscle rods". Muscles are anatomically bundles of long fibers, or you could call them rods.

You better stick around for a long time! I have a feeling I will be needing your wisdom! I have noticed that on a lot of post you explain in such detail. You are great!:D

Ok, your a little bit correct by breaking down the word. But the truth about rhabdomyalgia when it is used as a Dx just means Rhabdomyolysis as they are used interchangably. So I dont think Its meant as a symptom it is a diagnosis. Mucle Px is a s/s of rhabdo. Rhabdomyalgia, simply put, is when muscle breaks down for one reason or another(most commonly dehydration) and the process of the muscle breaking down realeases myoglibin and damaged muscle cells into the bloodstream. These myoglobin is both nephrotoxic and hepatotoxic. So an easy way to spot rhabdo is to observe for tea colored or brown urine, as this is the myoglobin, dead muscle cells, RBCs, and other urine makeup combined. It is a medical emergency and needs to be treated fast. It is very common in the military, we saw a lot of rhabdo cases in Iraq, due to heat, dehydration, and overexertion. But it can also be rooted in trauma or infarct as well. If a person has a Hx of rhabdo, they are far more likely to revisit.

Unless they just meant the PT has a Hx of unexplained muscle pain. But I think if that were true, they would have used fibromyalgia? Or just myalgia. Rhabdo is usually reserved for "muscle death."

You can really clean up your search results if you add "nlm.nih" into the search box after the term you are searching for.
