Hey everyone. Just looking for some advice. I'm a new grad who has always wanted the NICU. There were no NICU jobs practically anywhere in the city when I graduated over the summer so I accepted an ICU position (adults) hoping to eventually switch over to the NICU with some critical care experience.
My manager and HR both knew I really wanted NICU and said that they just expected a year out of me. I've been in orientation for 3 months and will be for another 3 months, since it's ICU, but now the NICU at my hospital is now hiring. I'm planning on going back to school next year for my NNP, but I know that you need two years in the NICU prior to advanced level courses.
So my dilemma is....do I keep the verbal committment of doing 1 year in my current job or try for my dream job in the NICU and get on the path towards achieving my educational goals of becoming an NNP. I don't want to burn any bridges but fear I might, considering it's within the same hospital. So how do I know whether it's right to do what's best for me personally or keep my committment to my current job. HELP! :) Thanks

Just my humble opinion, if they made it clear upon hiring that they expected a year and you agreed, you need to honor your commitment. This would be a good idea anytime, but especially given that you'd be in the same hospital system.

Honor your commitment! Don't burn bridges and you will go farther....all in good time!
That's what I was thinking....it's just so hard to watch your dream job open up and you can't do anything about it!! :)
