Joining the ranks (new grad, OR job!)

Congrats Heather2084 on getting the position! Another new grad in the OR...whooo hoooo!!!! I was also a new grad when i got hired into the OR in July and i still had to take my boards before starting the orientation. I asked the OR manager and educator what would happen if i didn't pass the boards and they told me i would have a seat reserved for the next class when i do pass...but fortunately i passed and didn't have to wait.

The OR is way different, its exciting and its very challenging! Its great that you have confidence! When do you take your boards? I wish you good luck and pass those boards so you can quickly get into the wonderful world of the OR! Keep us updated!!!!!!!

not sure yet when i take boards as graduation is Dec 16, but im hoping to take them early in Jan. So close, yet so far!

Hello

I am interested in going into the OR once I become a nurse. Did you guys have any previous experience? Is that why you were hired, or were you totally new with not much experience in the OR?

I have no surgical experience. I do work as a pt care tech in the same hospital and was told that since they normally want nurses to have some floor experience, the only reason they agreed to interview me was because I am on the floor as a PCT.

I was offered the position mostly due to my passion for going into the OR. The manager i interviewed with, as well as the clinical educator for OR both went to school knowing they only wanted to do OR when they came out, and being as thats how I am, I think they identified with me and saw some of theirselves in me. Also, I really knew my stuff about what the nurses do in OR, and I was great at answering their behavioral questions. She told me she was impressed during the first interview.

So no matter what you want to do, if someone tells you its an area that new grads arent normally hired, try anyway. Do your research and homework before the interview, know what to expect and know as much as you can about the position you are being interviewed for. I think that helped me more than anything. The manager even said that I knew more about what OR nurses do than the nurses she interviewed from the floor, which helped me feel VERY confident!

Congrats on getting the job..I was hired straight into the OR out of nursing school..I externed down there a year prior to graduating..I dont think I would want to be anywhere else..I am so excited for you..Congrats again...
