Johnson&Johnson and Merck collaboration

Published

Just days after J&J was granted EUA for its COVID-19 vaccine, the White House is expected to announce today that Merck will be helping to produce it.  Using the Defense Production Act, the government is helping to bring together rival drug companies to increase production of the vaccine.

I am incredibly excited about this!  Competition was great for spurring development of different vaccines from different companies. Some vaccines worked. Some didn't.  Now the drug manufacturers are shifting to cooperation after J&J's vaccine proved successful, and Merck's trials were stopped for disappointing results. This collaboration seems like a win-win situation.

My husband will become eligible for vaccination later this month, but he's already dreading the lottery-like element of securing an appointment.  I realize the prospect is still months away, but I hope to see getting vaccinated for COVID become as easy as getting a flu shot.
