Hi,
I was wondering if anyone knows of any places that employ student nurses on a part time or casual basis.
Thanks

Hello again, Michelle! If you live anywhere near uni, there are a few places that take students. Most of them prefer you to have finished at least first year because then you have some clinical experience.
The hospitals that I and my fellow 3rd years work at include the John Hunter, Royal Newcastle, Belmont, Hunter Valley Private, a plethora of nursing homes and also some mental health places. I myself find that working in a hospital is great - I only started in January. I am learning SO MUCH that uni doesn't even touch on, and that prac can't give you. I have my own patients that I do everything besides meds and IVs for. I have had to learn time management, better team work than you need on prac, how to recognise and retain the important information and how not to get yelled at by doctors!
I say give your resume to as many people as you can at those hospitals and see how they feel about first years. If they don't want you yet, make sure you give them an updated resume when you've finished this year.
Good luck!
Thanks for that info!
I spoke to a woman at John Hunter who isn't interested in first years, but maybe second years half way through next year. I also spoke to someone at the Royal, so I am going to send my resume off there too. I will also do some of the local hospitals too.
I don't have my first aid cert yet, will I do this in first year? Or should I go and get it now?
I really need to get something, hopefully soon. I finish up work where I am next week and then we are down to my hubby's wage.

I think most nursing homes will take first year students after they have been on placement and then during your third year you can work in hospitals as a third year undergrad.
