Jobs while in Nursing School

Nursing Students General Students

I recently applied at Deaconess and since I am a contractor at my current job and my contract is almost up, I am looking for a job in a hospital. I know I will have to wait until I am accepted into Nursing School to get apply to be a Student Nurse, but are there any other suggestions as to what else is out there? I REALLY NEED A JOB....... Thanks,

Our smaller hospitals have positions for people to work in the ER. I can't remember the title, but they teach you to do EKG's, transport patients, basically alot of grunt work but at least you have your foot in the door.

I have my RMA and work nights and weekends at an Urgent Care clinic as a clinic nurse. I love it, and the hours work out great.

Thanks, I will try looking into that. Can you tell me, do you have to be in nursing school first??? I would assume so.

The larger hospitals around here have all sorts of positions for techs, assistants and secretaries that don't require any sort of formal college education... Just check with some of your local places HR departments (or their websites if they list job openings there).

I'd like to get an in-hospital job as well, but the nearest good sized hospital is about 90 miles from here and that's a pretty good way to drive to work! LOL :D

What about a nurse assistant? I just registered at the community college in a non-credit 12 week course to become a Certified Nurse Assistant. Thought this would be good to do before I begin my nursing program in Jan. 2005.

The position I spoke of required no formal training, it was on site.

Even working as a health unit coordinator would give you some experience. It isn't hands-on, but you would be working with doctors orders, medical terms, side by side with nurses etc..

At least in Wisconsin, CNA's are in high demand.

I work as a Nurse Apprentice right now, but you DO have to be in Nursing School to apply. I would suggest to look for tech positions either in physical therapy clinics or in a hospital. You could also be a rehab tech or a transporter in a hospital. It is nice just to get some experience in the hospital setting. Just a note on the CNA's, I give them major credit cuz they have to do A LOT of dirty work and lifting to do, so it is a real demanding job. If you do work as a CNA, try not to get too burned out of all that bedside care before you start nursing school! Hope this may help!
