Read the OR nursing, real nursing? thread that is a few down from this one. It spells out some of the differences between the field of OR nursing and other areas. OR nursing requires learning a whole new set of skills, and it is completely different from nursing in other areas. It seems that people either love it or want nothing to do with it (my impression from speaking to others; I am a student).

As to why no one is jumping at the chance, it seems it would be hard for anyone to say without knowing more about the position. Will there be adequate training and preceptorship, how is the administration, is it generally a good hospital with good nurses and a good work environment?

The bottom line is probably whether you think you are interested in OR nursing and want to give it a try.

Maybe an experienced OR nurse will have a different response. Hope this helps. Good luck in your decision.

Specializes in OR.

A lot of people don't like 3-11, particularly those with kids that are school-age. As a person that's done 3-11 for 4 years now, I love it but the staff is usually smaller and you have to be ready to handle anything that comes through the door-maybe that scares some people...Also, if you take this job, they will orient you most likely on day shift. Do you have OR experience? If not ,then you are looking at a 6-12 month orientation. OR nursing is a different beast.
