Hi,
I'm considering being a nurse but before I decide completely I want to see what a normal shift is like for a rpn. I have an idea what the job entails but I'd rather make sure the job is how I view it instead of a romantic version. Who would I approach in a long term care facility and a hospital? Can I even job shadow in a hospital? Any help would definitely be appreciated!
You can job shadow in Alberta as a student but you need approval from the unit manager and there needs to be an opportunity.

Although you aren't exactly volunteering alongside a nurse, I'd still recommend volunteering at a local hospital. I did it and I think it helped. If nothing else it gave me a feel for what it was like working in a hospital and around patients. I volunteered in the PACU for about 6 months. Duties included handing out warm blankets, making beds after patients left, wheeling patients out of the unit to another one, fetching patients family members to bring them in to see the patient, handing out popsicles, recording the times that patients came into the unit and the times that patients left, answering the phone at times (when the admin was on lunch). On top of those simple tasks, I got to talk to a lot of nurses over the course of those 6 months! There were at least 8 or so in the unit that I was able to become rather familiar with and ask questions if I had them.
