Job opportunities for Informatics Nurses?

Specialties Informatics

Greetings,

I would like to hear from nurses currently working in informatics how numerous are job opportunities in your field?

I will be in my last term of a MSN program in January, and am considering doing my practicum with an informatics nurse. My main concern is finding a job as soon as possible after graduation which offers a good work environment and decent pay. What do employers look for when hiring an informatics nurse? Will a 250 hour grad school practicum be considered sufficient experience to get into the field?

Thanks in advance for any enlightenment anyone out there can offer me!

Opportunities within the field of nursing informatics, healthcare informatics and clinical information systems are as varied and numerous as the field(s) themselves. Many are not listed on the internet job sites or via newspaper classified sections, but ae learned about through word of mouth and networking. Have you looked at the jobs/careers sections of ANIA, AMIA, HIMSS, and your local nursing informatics organization? Have you been networking within your local nursing informatics organization? WINI- the Weekend Immersion in Nursing Informatics is a great way to learn about the specialty, prepare for the certification exam and NETWORK with experienced informatics nurses.

The skill set and experience required by a hiring manager will depend on the position they are seeking to fill and responsiblities of the role. The required experience will also depend on the project underway or planned, organizatonal needs, etc. I have no idea if your practicum will provide you sufficient experience as I do not know the scope of the project or the specifics of your contributions. Many hiring managers are seeking candidates with previous experience and those that can get up and running with a project quickly. Have you investigated potential opportunities within your current healthcare organization?
