Nurses Career Support

If this is in the wrong forum, sorry!!

Here's my situation in simple form:

I was employed in LTC facility for approx. 7 months. During this time I became pregnant and had some complications in my pregnant requiring me to ask off for multiple dates for OB appointments, ultrasounds, high risk OB appoitments, etc. I also ended up catching H1N1 when i was 16 weeks pregnant and had to be off work for almost two due this. During all this time state was coming into the LTC facility on a monthly bases (they would keep finding things not up to code.) When I was 23 weeks pregnant, I had my first passing out spell at the med-cart while getting a patient's narcotics out. I had absolutely NO warning that i was going to pass out. One second I was popping the pills out of card-like container, the next I was on the floor with 10 people including EMS around me. I ended up being transferred to the ER (which is on the same campus as LTC). Since the passing out, I was not 100% with it. I was groggy and couldnt recall things immediately afterwards. When I was transferred to the ER the narc's keys were still in my pocket, as soon as I was more with it and realized i had them the ER called the LTC and my supervisor came and got them. I was released about 6 hours of being in the ER as nothing was showing up on EKG, but instructed to call my OB and take the rest of the day off work. All the main office people and DON were out of office this day due to some State compliance meeting (the LTC facility was in great risk of being shut down since after 3 visits and still not up to code). I ended up passing out two more times at home and was admitted to another hospital where my OB is located. I was in the hospital for two days, no cause for passing out was found other than a possible genetic link (my sister also passed out with both my nephews). Since the doctor released me back to all normal activity I went to work the following day. At work, there was an outside wound nurse checking off all on duty nurses that day on wound care techniques. My turn came and I decided to do wound car on a patient I knew very well, I had changed her dressings multiple times since her admission. I gathered my supplies and headed to her room with the would care nurse following right behind, never saying a word. All was going well until, about mid-way through the dressing change, I started feeling really light headed and broke out into a cold sweat. I was afraid I was either going to pass out or vomit, So I quickly said "ill be right back" and ran to the nearest bathroom. When I returned both the DON and wound care nurse was waiting outside the patient's room for me. The DON instructed me to meet her in her office where she then proceeded to inform me I was being terminated for non-compliance with wound care policy and procedure. She mentioned I was a big liability to the facility since I passed out while having the narc drawer unlocked and kept giving scenerios of what could have happened (worst case ones at that). (btw, when I did pass out it was at the nursing station with 2 other nurses and a cna present.) I was also told by the DON that I had apparently made prior mistakes with my wound care and this also lead to the decision of my termination. I was unaware of any of this, had never been written up or anything prior.

Anyways to sum this up, I left that day and decided to give nursing a break since I was almost 5 months pregnant (not sure many places would hire a nurse that far into pregnancy). My daughter is now a year old and i'm trying to get back into the nursing world. What do I put on applications for reason for leaving this last job? im afraid the term "termination" will automatically throw my application out of consideration. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I don't know what to tell you. Maybe you should contact the employer and ask them what they are going to say about you. Why not? You can't exactly leave them off your resume since you worked there for some time. Yet there are some people who would advise you to leave them off and hope that a 7 month employment won't come to light. You would be taking a chance, of course, you are aware of that. If you don't want to contact them yourself, you can pay a reference checking firm about $80 to do a reference check for you. That way you can find out what you are up against. I would probably say you need to just come up with a short version of medical problems that caused the employer to terminate you. After all, that is the truth. Best wishes. I know this is a rough time for you.
