Jeff State point question

U.S.A. Alabama

Published

Hi,

How does Jeff state evaluate an application if you already have a BA degree and have taken some nursing pre-requisites like AP, Micro, Bio, Psy etc. (everything but chemistry). I am TRYING to get an answer from them with no luck

THANKS!!!

They evaluate you as they would anyone else. There is a worksheet on the Jeff State website that they use to calculate points. You get points for two science classes and one math class. (30 points for A's, 20 for B's and 10 for C's) Math is added in twice, you can get an additional 11 points for A's or B's. Since you have been out of high school for a while you will have to take the COMPASS reading test. Your score on that test and the points you earned for the science and math classes are all added together to give you your total points. I have been told there is a possibility the test will be changing and they wont use the COMPASS for much longer. But all of that is up in the air. To be competitive at Jeff State your points need to be upper 180's. I have applied for fall admission to the nursing program and I also have a bachelor's degree. The only classes they are interested in for admission are the science and math classes. My GPA from my previous work wasn't a consideration. I applied with 190 points and I know several people who have applied with the maximum points you can earn....200. When were you planning to apply for admission? If you go in and speak with an advisor they will pull up your classes and give you an idea of where you stand before you apply. But it is fairly easy to calculate it on your own. I hope this helps. :)

SliverofHope,

Thank you so much for the great information!! Since you know the scoop and already have a degree. I'm hoping you can answer a few other questions...

If you've already taken A&P, Micro, English, Psychology etc.. do you re-take it at Jeff State for the RN program? I completed some for my previous bachelor degree and have been taking A&P and Micro at another community college. I'm hoping I will NOT need to take them again. Do you have to retake anything?

I'm calling them tomorrow to get an appointment. But if you have any info I would so appreciate it. Thank you again!!!

:):):)

I had previously taken A & P at UAB but it was so long ago I decided to take them again at Jeff State. I hadn't ever taken micro so I just took it last semester. I believe the science classes have to have been taken within a certain length of time but I'm not sure if it is the past 5 years or 10 years. As for my psychology and english classes I just had those credits sent to jeff state. They were evaluated and I was given credit for them. I do have one psych class left to take and the only other classes I need after that are nursing classes. If I were you I wouldn't re-take anything without first speaking with an advisor. You don't want to take something that you really didn't have to mess with. The only way I would re-take a class is if you made a B and really needed the A for the points. Rather than calling them tomorrow if you live close enough you could drive over there and sign in and wait to be seen. You will be seen fairly quickly (at least you usually are) and I think it is faster than calling. Let me know how it goes!
