Jacksonville

Does anyone know of a program in Jacksonville that allows you to work at the hospital while going to school. Or if there is a program where the hospital pays for school if you sign a contract?

Not yet...but I'm looking too. I'll let you know what I find out. I heard that St Vincents has a 0% interest loan for nurses. I'm just not sure yet if it's for employees or employees-to-be. I also know that Shands is one of the approved sites for the Florida Nursing Student Loan forgiveness program. I'll attach a link for that program. Have you been accepted to a local program?

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. I haven't been accepted yet. I am still in the beginning stages of figuring out how to pay for it etc.

I appreciate the help!

Shands, St.Vincents, and Mayo are on the list for that program. Baptist has there own program and they offer $2000 a year I think.

Although St vincents and mayo are on the list, the State of Florida prioritizes who gets the money first. That list of participating locations is the order of priority. So, whoever is first on the list gets funds first, second gets it next, and so on until the money is gone. So yes, they are on the list, but you are less likey to get money if you go to those places.

I thought I'd attach the list of approved sites. Here's a link:

Thanks for the site and the clarification!

no problem. it wasn't clear to me until i called the guy who runs the program in tallahassee. it's a great program, but i just have concerns about feeling committed to one place for four years--what if i hate it? i also know that i want mayo....i want to go straight through to NP school while working as an RN. and since you only have to work 20 hours/week to be eligible for benefits there, that's the logical choice.....the only thing, though, is that mayo only hires new grads full-time, so i haven't figured out how i'm going to work that...i guess my choices would be work and go to school full-time, or work FT & school PT (but the NP program is already 2 years FT--i don't know that i want to drag it out any more....)

decisions, decisions....

Hi -

I'm not sure where you all are in the process but I'm just starting out and looking to go straight through to the graduate program in Nursing as well.

Here's my current plan:

-Working on Prereqs to program

-Take EMT certification course to provide ability to work in a field that will help round out education (many of the area hospitals will hire you as an EMT - Also recommended by several nurses I've talked to.)

-Attend FCCJ for AS in Nursing (much cheaper than UNF)

-Sit for RN exam

-Find RN job

-Attend RN - BSN bridge program at UNF

(it's one night a week and finishes in a year, with virtually no competition to get in the program (UNF Admissions couselors provided that gem :) ))

-Work Fulltime as RN while pursuing my BSN

(since program is only 1 day/night a week should be easy to schedule work shift around)

-Complete any pre-reqs necessary for Master's program

(either concurrently with BSN or the semester after depending on workload/schedule)

-Apply for Master's program

(hopefully will either have enough money saved up to survive or because I'll have a year + in working as an RN, employer will let me work Part time to complete my education. )

Fingers crossed all goes as planned! Please let me know if you all find anything else out about resources available to student nurses.

Thanks!

(P.S. - If anyone is looking for a place to live, I have a room for rent in the baymeadows/95/southside area :).)
