okay, i just heard that once you are accepted into valpo's rn program the advisor's choose your schedule, not you. is this true? i also heard your day begins at 7am? what happens to people who have children who don't go to school until 8am? just curious if all this is true or not. thanks!

I can't speak for Valpo, but in South Bend they do make your schedule of any classes that are nursing. They will tell you what days of the week and what hours you do what. As far as your day starting at 7, yep- or earlier! Depends on the clinical and the professor.
Class room times, however, I think our earliest was 8 or 8:30 - gets you a good parking space though!
Other than actual nursing courses, if you are brave enough to take other general courses as well, those you get to fit in as you see fit or course times allow.
There aren't exceptions to this in South Bend. Valpo might be different.

I am almost done with my second semester of the RN program at Valpo Ivy Tech. Yes what you heard is true for the most part. We are given 6 block options and we choose our 1st, 2nd, and 3rd choice and they try to put you where you want, but only 10 people are allowed per block. It is chosen by your rank that you enter the program with. Last semester I went 4 days/ week, including clinicals. My classes and labs started at 8 or 9 and my clinical was 6:30 am-3 p.m. on fridays at Methodist in Merrillville. This semester my schedule is Mon. (9-12), Wed (8am-11pm) and Thurs (3pm-11pm). Wednesday is a long day, I have med surg II lecture then clinical, with a lunch break in between. I chose to do 3 days and have one really long day, but some people went 4 days. My ob/peds clinical is on thursdays from 3pm-11pm. I enjoyed having the evening clinicals a lot more than the morning one I had last semseter. Well I hope this helps. Any other questions just let me know.

I am finishing up my 1st semester at Valpo. The schedule is set as other posters say. Next semesters schedule was posted yesterday, and has three different schedules. Block one is three days a week, block two and three are each four days a week. Clinicals start at 6:30 a.m. or 2-3 p.m. You will need to adapt to the school schedule, as they do not accommodate yours. The schedule is also subject to change if the hospital makes changes.

hey matilda, how was the teas test what did u do to study for it. i really want to get in but has to take the teas. I am done with the pre reqs and am an lpn of 5 years. looking forward to hearing from you. thanks also, r the teachers fair, or are they a trip like i heard about instructors in gary.
the teas is not horrible, it is pretty basic stuff and should be no problem if you have taken the pre-req's. for the teas, you need to answer all the questions you know in a section first, and then go back to answer the questions you don't readily know. each section is timed, so by answering what you know first, you answer more correctly. unanswered count as wrong, so more answered scores better. don't sweat it so much, it is not so bad. After one semester at Valpo, my group of friends and I find the teachers very good, fair, and helpful. The program is very hard and takes all of your time, and if you don't put in the effort to do well, the teachers have no mercy. I found that the people who had problems with the teachers were either not adult enough or were expecting to sashay through like in high school or just wanted someone else to blame. Nursing school is not like other programs, and pre req's are a breeze in comparison! Most of us made it through the semester, and are already reading and studying for fall. best of luck to you!
thank you so much. r u almost done with the program?also did u study from kaplan and ati for the teas. are there a lot of competition to get in,
I did not really study for the teas. I got online at ati and went over the practice stuff. If you have taken the pre reqs, there should be no problem passing it. As for the competition to get in the nursing program, there are alot who apply, but not a great amount who have the scores to get in. Many people apply when they don't have near the grades they need to be accepted. I knew at least 8 people who applied that did not have a 2.5 gpa. btw, I just finished my first nursing semester.
Thank you so much, did the 8 people get in? if they did was it because of their teas results. I think my gpa is a 3.0 from ivytech so far. I plan on applying to Gary in Aug for this spring and then by January for valpo is that possible to do, apply to 2 programs. I know it is a new curriculum posted. I last attended ivt in 2005. I will have to take 2 more prereqs english 2 or exposition and persuasion or something like that. also math 118. did you have to take math118. was it difficult, and did u have to take it online or class. thanks alot. oh by the way congrats on finishing ur first semester, i will keep u in my prayers, and I know HE will show u favor in all that you do.
I took math 118, and it was hard for me. I took it online and dropped it because the quizzes and tests included alot of word problems and had no real help available. At Valpo, I took it in person and learned so much more. I would have all pre reqs done before the program starts, because it will take all of your time to study and do homework during the program.
thank you so much

I will be applying in Spring of 2010 ror the nursing program at Valpo. When did you apply for the nursing program? Right now I am taking Speech and English Comp III. In the Fall I am going to take Math 118, IVYT 103, and Exposition and ? Then I will be going into the nursing program without having to worry about the pre-requs.
