] Can you run a heparin drip and NS on separate pumps at a Y-site? Heparin is infused very slowly and is compatable with NS . . . ? It would keep the site open w/o flushing . . .

You really do not need the NS to "keep the site open"...you would be suprised on how little is really needed to keep a site patent....in home infusion we run. .1 ml per hr inbetween ABX doses and that keeps our PICCs open...so if you are doing it for that reason it is not needed. If the pt really needs the NS you can give it at the Y site or hook up a T ext or dual or triple set at the catheter. I kind of like to run heparin by itself so I have the freedom to shut OFF and ON as needed.
