# IV infusion rates H E L P!!!!!

Published

I am driving myself crazy with these math problems. I understand the formula for calculating the infusion time ( divide total volume to infuse by the mL/hr rate ordered). Here is my problem:

Calculate infusion time

950mL ordered at 80mL/hr

So I'm dividing 950 by 80 and getting 11.875. The answer is 11 hours and 53 minutes. I don't know if my brain is fried or I'm just over thinking, but I cannot figure out how 11.875 equals 11hrs 53 mins. I NEED HELP PLEASE!!

What I am doing is rounding the 7 to an 8 so its 11.88. Then I am taking the 88 mins and making that 1hr and 28 mins, so I am getting 12hr and 28 mins. Its driving me insane. Any help will be appreciated!

You are definitely just over thinking this one. You're on the right path, you just need to fix your math at the end.

950/80 = 11.875. So you have 11 WHOLE hours and 0.875 of an hour left over. There are 60 minutes in an hour.

So, 60 x 0.875 = 52.5 minutes, which rounds to 53. So in the end you have 11 hours and 53 minutes!

0.88 hrs does not equal 88 minutes. That would only be so if there were 100 minutes in an hour. But, as there are 60 minutes in an hour, 0.88 x 60 = 52.8 minutes which rounds to 53 minutes.
