IV Cannulation Courses - Melbourne - Recommendations?

Hey, fellow Aussie RN's! :)

So, I'm working as an agency nurse in Australia and even though I have been trained and able to start IV's in the USA (through my BSN and on the job training), I can't do this procedure in Australia as I don't have a specific qualification or certificate in it (I find this rather frustrating as I feel this is an important aspect of patient care and I have to rely on someone else to now do this job, but hey, what can you do :D).

Anyone know of any recommended courses in Melbourne that are affordable and could even go toward my CPD credits (doesn't have to, but would be handy). Anyone taken a course they particularly liked and didn't cost the entire world?

Thanks in advance :)

Hi nursiebean,

IV cannulation and phlebotomy training is usually work-specific (work trains and certifies your competency). I say this because I'm not sure if an external course would be accepted as reciprocal by the hospitals that you will be working in considering practical assessment is required before you are signed off as competent.

I would like to think your agency has the capability to train you in that respect and also has arrangements with their clients (i.e. the hospitals they send you to work in) to recognise such training.

Have you asked your agency about this?

Thanks for the reply - I'm not sure if my agency would, as they didn't even want to pay for my CPR training and manual handling training.

Yeah, the only reason I asked because a nurse friend from the USA was able to transfer some IV work she did in the USA and they accepted it, and while I don't have anything that proves I can do IV's, I understand from their perspective they wouldn't just take my experience into consideration.

And yes, the hospitals probably won't train me or sign me off as I am an agency nurse.... probably going to be a skill that I won't be able to utilise while I'm here.
