I am a new nurse in the OR, but I have been working as a nurse in outpatient settings for some time.

1) Question: Is there an unspoken rule about wearing makeup in the OR?
2) Question: I noticed that many nurses wear a surgical cap in addition to the one provided by the hospital. Is there another unspoken rule about using them?

Wearing Makeup in the OR

  • Generally, the rule in the OR is to avoid wearing heavy makeup, particularly anything that could interfere with sterility or clog your mask, such as thick foundations or heavy eye makeup. This ensures that there's no risk of it coming off and contaminating the sterile field.

Reasoning: The main concern is hygiene. Makeup could flake off or create a barrier that prevents your face mask from sealing correctly, leading to contamination. However, makeup, moisturizer, or a small concealer is usually acceptable as long as it doesn't interfere with the fit of your mask.

  • Many hospitals prohibit wearing surgical caps not provided and laundered by the hospital.

Every hospital has its own culture and practices, and within that, mini-cultures. As with many things in healthcare, there may be variations depending on the hospital's policies or the surgical team's preferences. If you're unsure, don't hesitate to ask a more experienced colleague, educator, or supervisor for guidance and policies specific to your setting.

Best wishes,

Nurse Beth
