I know someone with more experience and knowledge than I have will answer this, but the short answer to your question is, No, trauma nursing is not med/surg. It's more closely related to emergency and critical care nursing. Most of the hospitals in my area require a minimum of six months med/sure experience, with a preference for one year or more. However, some will make exceptions if you have previous trauma/emergency/critical care experience in another capacity--EMT, NA, etc. Do what you need to get the experience you need, and then follow your passion. We always need good nurses in every area. Welcome to the world of nursing!

Hi All,
I'm a pre-nursing student, starting school in the fall. A few years ago, I worked on the Trauma floor at a large Level 1 Trauma inner-city hospital. LOVED IT!
Every MVA, stabbing, shooting that went down in the city and the surrounding areas came to us. We also had a step-down unit within the unit..and then there was the SICU next door.
Anyway, I'm most interested in working in Peds, PICU or the NICU..but I wouldn't mind being back on a trauma floor.
Just curious..would this floor be considered a med/surg floor? Thanks!
