hello,

i am very confused about my sister and am looking for some answers. a month ago my sister found out see was pregnant, she went to the doctor and confrimed that she was having a baby.:balloons:

but now she has ran into some problems a week and a half ago she started spotting, a few days later cramping and than a lot of bleeding. she went to the doctors and he gave her a blood test. results came back her hcg levels were high. 2 days later she is still bleeding, went for an ultrasound, they told her they see structure. so a day later went back to the doctors he examed her and said you maybe miscarrying but am not sure. ( what, not sure) then, he put her on bedrest. not only that my sister caught a cold, so she asked him if he could give her anything for that, so he prescribed codeine. (can a pregnant women have codeine?) and if so why is he giving it to her if she might be still pregnant? well, her next ultrasound is tues. and they are going to see if she still has a structure. but, i am wondering if maybe she was having twins and if one could be being miscarried. (is that possible) and how could a doctor not be so sure if she is miscarring! help me understand! my sister is so sad.:crying2:

A similar thing happened to me before I got pregnant with our third child. Hang in there--I know it's one of the toughest things to go through, I have been there. I have known people who had a lot of bleeding and ended up OK, but others who have miscarried. Best of luck to you and your sister.

It IS possible she was pg w/twins, esp with the unusually high HCG levels. Falling HCG levels and lack of ability to see the fetal heartbeat or pole with lady partsl u/s can be diagnostic of either miscarriage OR ectopic pregnancy. As long as future HCG levels rise at appropropriate levels (should be doubling every 48-72 hours), she should be ok. She may have experienced a "vanishing" twin or just lost one. She may have just a singleton, they have not seen yet. I don't know how far along she is or what her HCG levels are.

I do know It's normal to be able to see a fetal heartbeat or at least a fetal pole in utero, when HCG levels exceed 5000. Best wishes to her. I hope all is ok.

With my second child I had alot of bleeding. The doc put me on progesterone pills. I thought for sure I was going to loose him. He is 10 months old, and huge, and healthy! Tell her hang in there. Bleeding is scary, but it doesn't always mean a miscarriage.......

Too early to tell with the info you gave us...She might be early or they just saw what they thought is a fetal pole or she may have miscarried. Has anyone thought about checking her for a molar pregnancy or a blighted ovum if there were two to begin with? Bleeding can go on and yes, a woman may be given codeine, albeit sparingly, in pregnancy.
