Is this job worth keeping while busy in school?

Published

It's my 5th quarter in the nursing program and it's a full time crazy schedule. I have 2 different clinicals 3x a week, a lab once a week and an 8 hour lecture once a week (2 classes). I went back to my old CNA job over the summer and would give them certain days in which I would work. My boss is a very friendly person and understood about my crazy school schedule, as long as I would give her the dates I would be available. Once school started, it was getting busier and busier. I emailed my supervisor a list of dates.... yet she wouldn't put me on the schedule. I constantly had to call and ask if I was scheduled and I wasn't put on. I emailed/texted my supervisor AND boss and wouldn't get a reply back. (texting is what my supervisor prefers). This was going on for weeks and I have to admit, I started to care less. Why would I stay at a job where the communication isn't good? Despite me being very assertive and straightforward, accommodating their style of communication.

I also don't want to come off as arrogant but doing CNA work drains me emotionally, physically, and mentally... it hasn't helped me at all "enhance" my nursing learning. I'm not better than it or the people who are CNAs (not at all). But when you learn more and more about nursing and skills, you realize how valuable it is and would want to learn more... and not go back. For those of you who would say, "oh you can still learn from CNA experience", I'm sorry I would respectfully disagree. I've been a CNA for 6 years and it's one of the most difficult things to get out of the CNA mentality when you need to use critical thinking as a NURSE. Even being at that job, I feel like I'm losing everything I'm learning at school now. A job is a job - I get it but if I'm going to be THAT tired and do patient care, I would like to do it in a job that will enhance my learning (like being at a hospital but we all know how difficult that is right now). I would rather do something completely DIFFERENT than patient care (like working at the mall for now) than be drained doing something that won't help with my nursing learning. I told my nurse (at clinical) and she understood... she's an ICU nurse and hates being floated to PCU... it's that knowledge, I guess. ALSO, my supervisor texted on a Friday night, giving me until Monday morning to talk to my boss or they would fire me. First off, I found that unfair - giving me an ultimatum on a weekend when I'm exhausted, writing care plans, studying with people for tests, etc... then again, if I really cared, I would've called right away. I got too caught up with my lab on friday and clinicals this week....

Thoughts? Should I still email or call my boss to talk to her and then a give a proper notice? Or try to save me job?

Well, jobs in my area are pretty scarce nonexistent right now. If texting is the preferred method, than I would text just a couple of dates to keep the door opened and then deal with it. I was a CNA for 12yrs, LPN for just over 1yr, and now RN for just about 1.5yrs. My CNA experience definately helped me. Not sure why or how it wouldn't but that's personal.

Are you sure you'll land a RN job once you pass your Boards? If not, stick it out and at least you'll have a place to work.

Can you explain how your schedule is crazier than you anticipated and can only work a couple of days this month? Instead of all the days they want you to work?

I would also state the days you're available, and a specific date to hear back. If you don't hear back by that date, you will not be able to commit. I will not call my employer often to see if they put me on the schedule. The schedule should be out in advance with your name and the days you have agreed to work. I hate the day by day play it by ear crap!

I scheduled my supervisor a month before with dates but didn't get it. It was just non-exisistent

Well, if you posted dates and didn't get them, why do you need to talk to your boss? Works out well for you and you maintain employment. I would buzz her and let her know you sent your availability in and didn't get scheduled so now they have to look at the next month and go from there. If they don't like it, you don't like it, then give notice. Seems like there isn't much else you can do. Keep us posted and good luck!
