Is FNP more marketable than AGPCNP in the realm of Dermatology?

Not necessarily, and maybe not at all.

A dermatology clinic looking to hire a nurse practitioner may not prioritize training as a Family Nurse Practitioner (FNP) over an Adult-Gerontology Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (AGPCNP) or vice versa.

The NP license holds more importance than the specialty track.

They would value relevant experience, procedural know-how, and strong interpersonal abilities. When evaluating a potential new colleague for their team, a practice will also seek someone who is a team player, works effectively, and manages both solo and group tasks well.

Here are other things they may look for in an NP candidate:

  • Electronic health records (EHR) proficiency is a must-have in most practices.
  • Strong communication skills are essential. Providers must explain complex treatments, procedures, and follow-up care to patients in a way they can understand.
  • Cultural competency. NPs who demonstrate cultural sensitivity and can adapt to the needs of patients from various backgrounds.
  • Adaptability and multitasking are essential, especially when practicing in a busy office. Being able to handle a diverse caseload, multitask, and remain organized in a busy environment is a valuable trait.

With that said, and all things being equal, a dermatology practice might seek an NP for specific age groups, but I don't see this as a significant factor.

Good luck,

Nurse Beth
