Is Everybody Moving to California?

U.S.A. California

Published

Just an observation but, it seems like there's a flood of posts lately from people inquiring about moving here.

Not too long ago the local news seemed to be filled with stories about people supposedly moving away because of the high cost of living, traffic etc. I guess that in reality, it doesn't always seem to be the case ... at least with RN's.

So what's up posters? What made you decide to check out and/or move to Cali?

I dream of moving there. Not permanently, but at least some time. Of course on the coast in San Diego.... Yesss, Im there now...... ahhhh

I do plan on it. I live in Chicago, and the cost of living in San Diego is high compared to here, and they dont pay much more than they pay here.... but the beach will compensate for that.

I'm from the East Coast, moved here 7 years ago and now on my way back. I consider myself a warm and friendly person. However, in all the time I've been here I haven't been able to meet any decent people. They are all so fake. I'm tired of them saying one thing in your face and another behind your back. Let's not talk about the unit! It is 1000 times worse there. :(

Have people experienced this in other parts of the country? I work with a bunch of jealous, back-stabbing bitches (women AND men). Is it SoCal or just the nursing culture in general?

I live in Southern California and I know lots of nice people! Some of them work in hospitals, too. It is always harder to meet people when you move to a new place, though.

Well ..you need to take a look at the OTHEr states on this site. The conversation is minimal. Talk about antisocial people! CA .... is just like anywhere else. Some folks are good and nice and helpful and others are not. Big world, lots of people..... you have to put yourself in the environment to be around good ppl. ... nobody and nowhere is perfect..never will be. But there are good ppl out there....all over the place. Examine where you are hanging out! And what you PUT out...if for example you EXPECT ppl not to be nice...... well...... :)

I have been living in Southern California since 1995.

Prior to that, I was living in Las Vegas, Nevada, once I left the Army. IMHO..California has it's good points as well as it's bad points. The cost of living is high. Imagine, paying about $ 500,000 for a 3-4 bedroom home. (Some of these homes at outrageous prices are less than 1500 sq. ft)!!!And, that it just depends on location, square footage, extra amenities, etc. Real estate prices are ridiculous! Nurses are paid higher wages compared to other states due to the cost of living. True, the weather is nice. Rare for it to be freezing...at least where I live. I don't even own a heavy winter coat, like I did when I lived back East (I am a native New Yorker). New York is no better either! Very expensive, crowded, and winters are freezing COLD!!!!

There are mountains, beaches, museums, theme parks, entertainment, etc. It depends on what you are looking for, and what is important to you. Also, if you are single/

married/kids/no kids, etc. The traffic is the pits too! I live about 25 miles from Los Angeles, and it takes about

1 to 1.5 hrs to get to downtown on the freeway, and mind you...this is ONE way. Traffic jams and delays are very similar to Manhattan, just like in New York City.

In all honesty, my family and I are looking into moving to Arizona. As a LVN/LPN, the wages seem to be competitive/

decent. The average LVN/LPN pay in California is about $18 to 20 per hour, before taxes. Arizona offers LVN's/LPN's $25 to $30 per hour. As for what you pay for a home here in California...you can get a brand new home (4 bdrms/2 full bathrms) for about half the price in Arizona. No place is ever going to be perfect. But, for us...we have decided that it's time to move on.

I think it's just people, period. I've lived on both coasts and the south and it's pretty much all the same, really. Geography, unfortunately, doesn't change human nature.

Well ... a lot of people sold their houses here and paid cash for cheaper homes in Arizona and elsewhere. I could have done that but, I don't want the higher patient ratios you get in Arizona. The RN pay is a lot lower there also ... $15K less year on average, actually.

I do think it's very different situation for LVN's. In California the wages and job opportunities just aren't the same for LVN's as it is for RN's. I'd probably look at the whole thing differently if I was an LVN.

I wish everyone who moved from California here to Idaho would go ahead and move back... looking at things from this side it seems like a mass migration from Cali to Northern Idaho!

Yep LOTS of cali ppl come to the pac nw and idaho, etc....lots and lots and that is why in the seattle area (general) the real estate took a 16.5 percent increase last year in 2005. You think Cali living is expensive.....pac nw will be hit just the same over the next 5 years. You watch.
