Is it the end of my career?

Nurses General Nursing

Published

A interim manager came to fix the chronic problems (nursing care) we had on our floor,(med-surg), my manager was terminated. She started to letting people go. I am a brand new nurse. It has been 5 months since I started to work there. I really did not have a good orientation. The new manager knew that. However, A few weeks ago, I was terminated without given a chance to look for another job. The lack of competency was the reason. I feel like I was in a wrong place and wrong time. Now, Is this the end of my career? Will other hospitals even ask me for an interview? Any suggestions...Please!!!

Do not rush into an end of your career mode. You have two choices. you can put this job on your resume and explain that there was a departmental reoganisation after you nurse manager left. This happens a lot. To do this you need a couple of references from nurses you worked with. Try to talk to your old nurse manager. She might give you some insight into what happened and write you a good letter of reference. I have know a number of nurses who didn't do well on their first job but found another job and went on to long careers in nursing.

The other option you have if you live in a large city where every one doesn't know everyone is just dont put this job on your resume and if anyone asks what you did after nursing school you took care of a sick family member or went on a long vacation.

Sounds like the place you were working in was on a downward spiral and it wasn't a great place to start off as a new graduate. In a better setting you will do better.

Thank you very much for the encouragement and advice!
