Is it easier

Published

I was wondering if it is easier/better to get into an icu nursing position straight out of nursing school as a new grad and go through an orientation program or to transition later on. i currently work as a nurse extern in icu stepdown and really like it and most likely will be offered a job there...i graduate in december 09. One of my goals is to work in an icu...not just for the overall job but as to gain experience to go on to be a flight nurse...long term goal. Once I graduate, I will have worked in stepdown for a year and a half. I have no problem with staying in stepdown for a little while; great experience-most new grads in icu at the hospital I am at are required to orientate and work stepdown for a few months. I just don't want screw myself out of any opportunities or make any severe mistakes that would cost me later. Thanks for any input.

If you can get hired into an ICU internship or get an ICU job with an organization that provides adequate support for new grads -- GO FOR IT!! Otherwise, the ICU environment is a little too high-stress for a new grad.

I never worked anywhere else - straight into Neuro/Trauma ICU as a new grad. It felt like 'home' from day one. It really depends upon the people you are working with, and the resources they will provide you with.

thanks for the reply. Is it offensive and in bad taste to the unit I have been externing on to leave and not stay with them for awhile....i don't want to burn any bridges.
