I'm so ready to relocate by July of this year but it is becoming very discouraging due to the lack of "employment" for out of towners and new grads. Do you really have to have an "insider" to help out with employment? Do tell!! THanks.

Depends on your skill set. If you have mad skills in a high-demand area such as Critical care, OB, OR -- you'll be fine. Specialty certification is also a real plus.
Just remember that Houston does not just mean "Medical Center". There are great facilities in all areas of town- and you won't have to pay to park in a remote lot - LOL. Everybody uses online application systems, so that's your first step. If you're relocating from another state, make sure you already have your TX license.
Best of luck to you, but I do have to warn you that July is not exactly the best time to relocate to Houston.... it's jungle-hot, and when you go outside, you'd swear you're walking on the surface of the sun. . .

Thanks so much for the info! LOL "walking on the surface of the sun".. I've heard. Actually, That's when I'm looking to relocate so I can get my son registered in Middle school. I'm sure I'll have to live in a Hotel for about a week or so before I find a place but my main focus is employment.
I have experience from GYN ONC to Correctional nursing with Med/surg, LTC and Ambulatory in the middle. I just sent off for my reciprocity in Tx. And I rather be hot and bothered than spend another winter here in NYC!!
Thanks

Hi Mimi,
As an experienced nurse you shouldn't have trouble finding a job, but there are a ton of hospitals throughout Houston. Because it's such a big city, you should look into what part of town you might want to live... There are some old forums on here about nice areas of the city with quality public education systems.
Once you have an idea of where you might want to live, the Memorial Hermann hospital system, which has 8 or 9 hospitals throughout the city, has an online form you can submit to have them call you and talk to you about your qualifications and work interests. It will be important to know where you might want to work though, otherwise they'll probably try to push you into a particular facility or area (where they have the greatest need).
memorialhermann.org/careers Look at the column on the right side of the page.
The other big name health systems with multiple locations are St. Luke's and The Methodist Hospital. And, of course, if you're interested in oncology, MD Anderson Cancer center is the best of the best.
