IS it better to decline?

If I have been accepted to one school, but won't find out about another school for a month or so, is it better to accept and then decline the first school, or decline from the beginning?

Am I missing something here? Why did you apply at the first school if you are going to decline??? Why not accept? A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush. Why wait for the second school and then have them possibly turn you down and then you would not have any school to go to.

It wouldn't be the smartest thing to decline the first school and then be rejected from the 2nd school. If you had no intention of even going to the first school, why apply if just to decline?

Here's my opinion on this...accept your position at the first school...and then when you hear from the 2nd school and you are accepted you have a choice of schools, but if you happen to be declined by the 2nd school you still have your spot at the 1st school and your not out both schools. Hope this is what you were asking for opinions on

Thanks for the advice!

It sounds like you would prefer to attend the school you are waiting to hear from, but don't want to lose the opportunity to get in somewhere. I would wait as long as you can until you have to accept. Maybe you will hear something before then. If that doesn't work out, I would go ahead and accept the first offer. If you do get accepted to the other school, then you can always decline the other school. I believe most schools have waiting lists for reasons such as these. It's a competitive world out there and it works both ways. It just happens to be that the ball is in your court now, which is a good place to be. Just be professional in all your dealings and you can't go wrong. Kudos to you for having a back up school.
