Is it bad I want out of bedside already

Published

Four months in and I'm already dreaming about a less pressured, less stressful nursing job. I work on a pretty heavy hem/onc floor that seems to be chronically short staffed and everyday I think about moving which is sad because I worked really hard to get this position. The constant stress of going on that floor is really getting to me, I don't know if this is typical new grad feelings or just that I am truly not cut out for bedside nursing. It's a horrible feeling because this is what I thought I wanted, but like a part of me sees things like outpatient positions, public health,  low acuity urgent care, private practices as just something that won't drain my soul and have me super stressed out all that time.  Im sticking this out for a year no matter what but a part of me really will feel like a failure if I have to step away from the beside this early in my career but the feeling of stress is unlike nothing I've felt before.

You are not a failure and you're not alone. Stick out the year and then the world opens up more and you can move on. So many feel as you do and this has me so worried for the future of healthcare. We need the next generation of nurses more than they need us at this point. I am sickened and saddened to see this.

Back in the 90s when I became a nurse, it was so different. I was proud to be an RN. Now it's just a means to pay the bills and charting is all we do, less patient care, more nursing machines.

It's not what any of us signed up for.

Hang in there and then move on. Meantime, advance your education if you can to open up those doors to get yourself out of the situation you are in now.

The great news about nursing is there are over 30+ different nursing careers you can jump into. Some may take more time/experience than others but it is all attainable.
