I am a Practical Nursing Instructor and I am teaching drug calculations for the first time this coming semester. I was wondering if anyone knew if the apothecary system of measurement (grains, drams, minims, etc) is tested over on the NCLEX. I teach LPN students. I know it is something not used but very rarely. I have tried to research this topic with not much luck at all. Does anyone know? When you were in nursing school, did you learn the apothecary system? Any helpful articles/websites would be great on this topic. Any insight is greatly appreciated! thank you!

No .. they don't test how many gr of aspirin :) In most nursing programs it is briefly mentioned as part of nursing history but not taught...
Last exposure I had was several years back an old physician still used it on orders .. retired now..
but then again I'm guilty of letting go... I still find myself using "cc" sometimes instead of "ml" and newer nurses look at me like I'm speaking a very strange foreign language.
