Interviews-What to look for

So, I went on my very first interview for a CNA and it was not what I expected at all. I felt that the interviewer was unprofessional. The interviewer told me things about the people who were leaving and why the position was open. The interviewer also made several just general unprofessional comments. I've been on interviews before for other jobs and overall just felt very uncomforable. I've figured in a field that values privacy that this was just totally uncalled for and I didn't want to work for this person. So, does anyone have any advice on what to look for when going on an interview? :) Thanks!!!

You should expect the person conducting the interview to be professional. They should ask you a number of questions regarding your experience and why you want to work there. They might ask you what your strengths and weaknesses are. There might be some general discussion about the unit and what they do there, types of patients, shifts etc. There might me some mention of specific problems they might be having but the topic should be discussed in a manner that points out what their goals are for correcting the issue and determining if you can meet that new, expected standard. You should ask for a tour of the unit. When on the unit you should look to see if the unit is clean and if people are working or just sitting around. Notice smells. Stand at the nursing station for a few minutes if you can and observe how people seem to be getting along with each other. You also need to determine what kind of management they have on the shift you work. Do they have set charge nurses or do they rotate charge nurses. If you do not get a good feeling, don't go there. Have a list of questions that you want to ask and don't be afraid to make notes as you go. Do not bring up the issue of salary and benefits until the end of the interview. If the person interviewing you is talking bad about everyone else in the unit, then you do not want to work there.

Thanks so much, I appreciate it! The interviewer actually brought up my salary at previous jobs and how much I was making. I'm not going to take the job due to the fact that it made me so uncomforable and due to the hours I'm looking for they don't offer. I never thought of taking a tour, thank you so much!

If people in leadership positions are making biased remarks, you can expect that to be a reflection of the way the entire hospital is run. I'd steer clear of the job, unless you really really need it. Something is up when those who are supposed to be in control are not.
