Interview for Peds Hematology, Nephrology, Urology, Oncology unit! HELP

Nurses New Nurse

I have a last minute, unexpected interview tomorrow morning. I was originally put on a waiting list for the fall but then was told there was an additional opening so now I am going in for my second interview. The interview is for a transitions RN residency program for new grads that begins in July. The job is at a children's hospital. This program is for 16 weeks and I will be working on the hematology, nephrology, urology, oncology unit. I am always super nervous whenever I have to interview for anything and always seem to draw a blank when asked questions. I am even more nervous because I am going to be interviewed by three individuals at once. Can anyone give me any advice as to what to expect as far as questions???

Also, I never seem to know what questions to ask an employer because they always seem to answer all of my questions during the interview process. But I know that it is always good to ask questions!

At my interview they asked me to tell them about myself. They asked what things the manager at my last job would say about me. They may ask questions like what would you do in this circumstance.

Just breath. Listen to what they are asking you and answer as honestly as you can, highlighting the good things.

Also, wear something comfortable that makes you feel confident.

Good Luck!

Thank you! I'll definitely try to slow down and breath because I know I get myself worked up and start talking extra fast.

Hello msherril85!

I'm a senior nursing student & I'm doing my practicum at Children's Hospital on a hematology/oncology unit and I ran into your post! I was wondering what kinds of things you saw on your unit & if there's anything in particular that you didn't expect? I'm a bit nervous because throughout all my clinicals we've never worked with patients who had cancer, let alone children with cancer! But I think it will be a wonderful learning experience.

I was also wondering if you were offered a job after the new grad program? What type of questions did they end up asking you? I'd love to apply for it! Was this the Children's Hospital in Boston? Sorry to bombard you with questions but I'm very curious :) Thank you!

I ended up not going with that job. But it was like a bridge program, where you start off as a grad nurse and at the end of the program you're on your own as a RN! Most places ask the same questions. Things such as:Describe yourself in 3 wordsGive specific example of how you dealt with a difficult situation/ went above and beyond for someone/dealt with family members/difficult co-workers, etcWhy do you want to work here? When I was on my interview, I was given a tour of the unit and we ran into a long term pt, a little girl. She was on her way to the play room with the assistance of two nurses. When she got closer to me, she left go of one of the nurses hand and grabbed mine! And we walked her the rest of the way. I will never forget that. Even though she was very sick, she is still first of all, a child, innocent and she wanted to play, lol! Remember that, they're still kids and usually we're more scared then them. Oh and this was Children's Hospital of Michigan in Detroit, Mi.
