Interview for Home Health on Monday. Considering transition from hospital to home hea

Published

I have to go for an interview on Monday for a homecare RN job. Still have no idea what kind of position it is ... Clinical manager or a staff homecare nurse. Coz I know they hire lots of LPN to do homecare visit. Is RN jobs different?

I have a few years of experience in nursing. I started out in Nero/MS floor for 1.2 years then MS ICU for 8 months. I quit my MSICU job because I went back to school full time for 4-6 months to complete pre-med/pre-pharmacy course. Then, I have been working on my new job cardiac telemetry for 8 months (weekend option) while going to pharmacy school. I have been feeling that bedside nursing is not my niche. I am OK with my job now because it works with school schedule and I get along well with my co-worker.

The reason I want to go to home health is because I am burnt out from bed-side/hospital nursing and want to change my career path. Moreover, I don't think I can handle the stress/physicial exhaustion of working 2 12-hr shift in the hospital while having to go to school M-F for the next 3 year in pharmacy school. I think homehealth would be at a slower pace. I know it is difficult to find anything bedside jobs on weekend. I want to try managed care/research etc. But my school schedule won't allow it. However, I am still in the dilemma of quitting pharmacy school and applying for dental school next year. Therefore, I want to get a nursing job that I feel "OK" with and work for a year during the limbo of the application process with dental school. I don't want to work at bed-side and be in limbo for another year if I decide to take the risk of quitting pharmacy school (not until this May. so I have to work weekends for now)

1) One good things about hospital job is that once my shift is over, then the job is done. Is it the same for home health? I heard they have to stay over to finish up the paperwork? I am concerned because I have school and exam on Monday. Is the shift 12-hours like hospital?

2) what are the RN jobs like in homecare? Can someone give me some suggestion? What questions will be asked during the interview?

I have "zero" homecare experience so I am quite nervous. And they told me that they prefer someone who is experienced on weekend because the office is closed. However, I want to be prepared. I hope that I might be lucky and get the job.

3) Are they going to ask me tough clinical questions during the interview?

4) What is the typical salary for HH RN in the Georgia? Right now my pay in the hospital is only around $25 + $6.75 weekend pay.

Thank you guys! I am sorry for long post.

if you want to work only weekends you will not be a case manager, you will most likely just be doing per diem visits,

they will usually just give you so many visits to do and when you are done you are done. you would do the paperwork at home if you don't get it done during the day. i recommend trying to do the documentaation right in the home or in the car between patients, i have been in the situation of being backed up with paperwork and it is not fun...

a per diem or weekend rn position is just visits, the types depend on what the caseload of the agency is, sometimes wound care (wound care is big in home health), iv's, etc.

there would probably be a supervisor on call if you have a problem

3) are they going to ask me tough clinical questions during the interview?

i guess it depends but i done think they will ask clinical questions, maybe some problem solving, "what would you do if this happened"- type things
