internet provider for travelling

hi, I am going to be coming stateside early january, when we came here we signed on with a local internet provider, but we are now looking for a larger provider who can be easily accessed in different states. we are hoping to be in arizona, california, alaska maybe and kentucky and maybe pennsylvania. not sure about which states, but probably arizona first. I am with AOL in the uk and havent had any problems with them, but I am not sure about providers for travelling. want to do it sooner rather than later, so that we can access the internet easily, as it is our main link back to our family in the uk.

You can continue to use AOL if that's what you want. They have a presence in all 50 states. Unfortunately it's only dialup speeds, but it'll be there.

Downside: it's expensive (for dialup), like $24.95 per month.

If you desire something faster (like broadband), you'll neel to go with whoever the local provider is. Usually that's the local telephone provider like Bellsouth, Qwest, PacBell, etc; or the local cable TV provider like Comcast, Adelphia, SpeakEasy, Verison, etc. Some of the broadband providers are nationwide

Downside: it's more expensive than dialup, anywhere from $29 to $50 a month. Also, you will only be able to take your service with you if you move to an area that they service.

Might be more simple to stick with the AOL dialup. In the long run, it will most likely be cheaper, too.

However, for my needs, I just sign up with whoever's the local broadband provider and cancel the service when I leave. I do that because I have Vonage VoIP telephone service (which requires broadband) that I can take with me wherever I go, so I always have a telephone number that never changes. It helps to keep people in touch.
