International Scholar Laureate?

Published

I received something in the mail today regarding participation in the International Scholar Laureate program and was wondering if anyone else had any recent experience with it? I did some research and heard conflicting responses from people -- some say it's a scam, some say it's a good opportunity. Bottom line, it sounds like a People to People Exchange Program where they send out a canvas letter to everyone on the honor roll and invite them to pay the price and go. The only thing that made me even somewhat interested is the opportunity to 1. Travel and 2. "discover" the field of nursing from a non-USA perspective. I'm not really looking at it to be a resume-padder, but more of an interesting experience to see how medicine (including herbal medicine) is practiced in China. Unfortunately, I don't have several thousand dollars sitting around, but could come up with it if need be. I just wanted more first-hand experience anecdotes before I even try to make a decision about going.

Got the same letter....decided against it cause I got tuition to pay and don't have extra money to pay for volunteer opportunities...of which I can do the same thing for free via my school, church, and community.

There are scholarships available through certain organizations. Like you, I don't have 5k sitting around for a trip to China, but I do qualify for a scholarship because of my Phi Theta Kappa membership. Visit the ISLP website and search for scholarships. I figure, nothing ventured, nothing gained.

I received the same later, and stuck it in my mental It'd Be Lovely if I Had the Scratch file. I also have a family at home who depend on me; it'd be kind of selfish if I just up and left. It did remind me of the People to People program my kids keep receiving letters for. If you have the money and are in a situation in which you can travel, it might be a wonderful opportunity.
