I think you will find it hard due to insurance. Maybe a bit more specific on duration of placement and where you are considering going in the US. Check out the International/UK forum as there may be a few old threads on how other students managed anything. I know a few found it easier going to Australia. Have you contacted your student placement advisor and see what info they have?

Hi there, I'm a british nurse currently working in the US, I have worked here as a nurse for 6 yrs. Basically, to come to the US is complicated. first of all, your british qualification is not fully accepted, in order to practise over here you have to have the US qualification.
There are several steps you have to go through, by far the easiest way to do it is to go through an International Nursing agency - there are quite a few of them out there. They will help you with your green card, and with obtaining you US qualification, the whole process can take anything from 9mths to 2 yrs. Most agencies won't take you unless you've had at least 1 yrs experience in your specialty.
You have to realise that the whole training process is different in each country, the US nurse trains equally in medical, surgical, pediatrics, obstetrics and psych. When you start the whole application process , you will be asked to submit your" transcripts of training" this HAS to be submitted by your nursing school. This can sometimes cause problems for us Brits as we don't always have enough hours to satisfy the various boards overhere, extra courses are sometimes required.
I could write pages about the whole process, but if you want to look further look up CGFNS (Certification of graduates of foreign nursing schools) they should be able to help you, failing that, look up the agancies and they will be able to help you. good luck!!
Hi Britgirl37
The member is looking for a International placement in the US whilst still a student. Currently to move you are looking at 4-5 year wait due to retrogression
thanks all for your help and advices.
Hi Blessing10,
Sorry, I misunderstood earlier. Have you thought about a non-clinical placement in the US? When I did my elective clinical placement I was told I could do anything as long as I could relate it to nursing. I ended up going to Canada to a Sioux Indian Reservation, spending time with a Native Spiritual Healer. Upon my return I did a presentation on the state of health of Native peoples.
Maybe there are some voluntary organizations you could contact? I don't believe insurance would be such an issue for this type of placement.
Anyway, just something to think about.
