insurance company jobs as new grad nurse

Published

Hello,

my question is about an insurance job as a new grad nurse. Is it possible to get an insurance company job right after you graduate or do they have a new grad program? I was really wondering if that is possible. Please let me know.

Thanks

I work as a nurse trainer for a major insurance company and have not seen a new grad come through. I think previous hands on experience is necessary to do well at these jobs.

Do you know exactly what type of insurance job you are looking for? Insurance companies utilize nurses in all sorts of ways. The majority of these careers you utilize your past nursing experiences to guide you. You could train a monkey to review innerqual or MCG but you also need to be able to interpret the documentation you're reviewing beyond these platforms. If you're looking at case management for insurance companies I would strongly advise getting a solid base in nursing first. There is a lot of critical thinking involved with the data you are collecting. You are the front line in keeping the subscriber healthy and preventing costly tertiary prevention measures that hit your insurance company's bottom line.

Another facet to keep in mind when considering nursing jobs, ultimately this country will move to universal healthcare. It could be next year it could be decades but the possibility does exist that a system is chosen that is strictly government ran. What happens to your job in this case? It could be absorbed by government but it could also be eliminated. Don't get me wrong this is probably in the far future but it is something to keep in mind.
