Insufficient academic progress/too many units attempted?

Published

Let me try to make this short :) I went to community college 15 years ago and received a few W's and some substandard grades. Now as a mature adult I have returned to school and decided I want to be nurse (psych was my first choice)

I received one semester of financial aid (did well in classes) and now am in my second semester back and they denied financial aid because I have attempted too many units and not received a degree.

The financial aid person said that I need to transfer to a four school asap. I don't have my science prerequisites done AND I was planning on getting an associate degree because I want to start working asap.

Is a BSN my only option now? HELP!? All of my prerequisites are met but the sciences. The two semesters I have been back the classes were closed by the time I registered.

It sounds like BSN is your only option unless you want to stay at your community college and pay out of pocket. Maybe look into possible scholarships or try work study to get your associates if you decide to stay there.

Have you tried transferring to a different community college? Although one school won't give you aid you can always try another school. That's what I did.

I had the same problem with financial aid because I went through the post secondary program the last two years of high school, and they counted those credits toward my associates degree. I was told (atleast at my community college) that you could appeal this through the financial aid office. Try and ask your school about this option. Another option is you could try and find a job at a hospital now before you start the nursing program and a lot of times they have a tuition reimbursement program. Hope this helps
