PICC Training

Was wondering if any of you could help with providing info. on where or how to obtain experience or certification in learning to place PICC's and/or Mid-lines. Found a few companies across the country that I could attend a week-end course for $$$$$$$2,500.00 (holy crap)!!!!!!! My current IV team at the hospital hasn't exactly been helpful. I also found a "home study" company (not exactly sure how you learn PICC's thru self study). Any info providied would be helpful, Thank you.

Try the IV team's supervisor/clinical manager, or the Nursing supervisor. They would be possible resources. Wierd how some people are "territorial" about a particular skill like PICC line insertion.

My hospital paid for someone to come to our hosptial and train a group of us. I think they contacted her through our vendor, B-D.

B-D has an on-line cert course. After completion of the cert course, we have had some nurses come to our facility for "hands on" training.

PICC Training is fairly standard now consisting of Basic PICC curriculum 8 hour training, complete a post test and then do a simulated insertion with someone qualified in PICC placement or an MD. Either on-site class training or now DVD self study works well. After completing the 8 hour training you go on to do supervised insertions on patients to the point of competence, that has to be with someone PICC trained or a physician.
