A client is experiencing gastric pain with vomiting and diarrhea. A nurse is setting up the room. Which of the following is required until an enteric micro-organism is ruled out? (Select all that apply)
Gloves,
Gown,
Mask,
Handwashing,
Private Room
Answer: Gloves, Gown, Handwashing, Private Room
Question: Why would a private room be required? There is no contagious infection or air-borne infection.
Page 717, box 27-4, chapter 27 in Taylor's fundamentals: review room assignments carefully, place patients who may contaminate the environment in private rooms (such as a incontinent patient).
Hope this helps! :)
(I just happen to be reading it and took a break...Go figure)
Per the question, an enteric micro-organism still needs to be ruled out, so you can't say for certain that one does not exist. Plus, it's pretty uncomfortable for both parties to have to share a room with all that going on.
think of it this way. you dont know whats up yet. you didnt do the test so how can you assign a certain level or precaution. better to error on the safe side you know
