Joyce Echaquan, a member of the Atikamekw tribe, was admitted to Joliette hospital in Quebec for stomach pains. After she alleged she was being overdosed with morphine, she began filming. Nurses said in French “You’re stupid as hell”, “You made some bad choices, my dear”, “What are your children going to think, seeing you like this?” “She’s good at having sex, more than anything else,” and “Who do you think is paying for this?”
“Discrimination against First Nations people remains prevalent in the healthcare system and this needs to stop,” says Perry Bellegarde, the Assembly of First Nations national chief.
Quebec premier François Legault condemned the staff’s actions, but denied this is a part of systemic racism. “I really don’t think we have this kind of way of dealing with First Nations people in our hospitals in Quebec.”

Has there been an investigation? What were the findings? At first glance I thought this might be something egregious and it may very well be. But protests and interviews with people who don't know any more than I do are not really telling the story.
I hope this story is thoroughly investigated by whomever oversees health care in Quebec. If the staff are guilty of what they've been accused of, there certainly need to be repercussions. But right now, it's an emotion piece by CBC to milk ratings. They are certainly doing a disservice to someone who may well need to be spoken up for.
If there is racism, is it province-wide as is alleged? A poorly-run hospital? Or a little clique of staff that needs to be shut down? I would certainly like the whole story before I form an opinion.
