Hi all,

For anyone who has done this program: can those online courses be doubled? I'm interested in their program, but would like to finish in less than the 2.5 year time frame. Are there any FNP programs online that can be done in less than 2.5 years? Thanks in advance, UnitRN01

Hi there. I'm a student at Indiana State University (kind of similar to IWU) in the FNP program. It's a 2 year program that consists of 5 total semesters. Most graduate programs will not allow you to double up on classwork - a f/t load is typically around 12-15 credits depending on which classes you're taking. You would have to receive approval from the Dean to take extra.

Additionally, once you're scheduled for clinicals, you can't really double those up either since they all require a pre-req clinical in order to move onto the next one. Having attempted to load up on courses to graduate in 2 years I have learned that it's close to impossible to bite off more than you can chew if you rely on an income during that time. If you don't have to work while in school then you might have an easier time finishing up in that 2 years.

Two other schools I looked at were Duquense University in Pittsburgh and Graceland University in Iowa. If I recall correctly they, too, were 2 year programs.

Are you interested in attending an on-campus program or are you ok with a web-based program?

I'm looking for an online program. IWU's FNP program is: first 14 months is totally online (6 week sessions, with 2 weeks off in between sessions-this is what I'm wanting to double if possible), then the last 12 months are 'Edu-flex, meaning that we'd meet once a week at their bricknmortal satelite school in my area, and the rest of the assignments are done online, except of course for the practicums. I know that Vanderbilt's program is 3 semesters, but it's also about $45K once you add in the hotel stays, etc., whereas IWU's program will cost me $20K.

Thanks, UnitRN01

I go to Indiana Weslayan University. No way can you complete the program any faster than the 2.5 yrs. The classes are taken one at a time and they can be pretty intense as it is. The last year is clinicals and still class room. Some of the core classes are online and then you meet a couple of time for these classes.

Hi,

I have applied and been accepted to IU's ANP program. A couple of things have happened to make me consider Ind Wes instead (long clinical wait, tuition rising).

Can you tell me more about Ind Wes program? How has your experience been overall?

Is what the pp said correct....the first 1.5 years is online and the last year is classroom? The classes are accelerated? Do they find clinical placement? Are books included in the tuition (I know this is the case with their RN-to-BSN program)?

Thanks

hello D

we have to find our own clinical sites, but previous students have a list of where they do clinicals at. In a way you taylor make your own program to suite what you want to get out it. U have to be aggressive though with finding preceptors and almost be willing to travel out of the indianpolis area. I chose the FNP route because I can see all ages of patients and if i want to specialize, I can. Our tuition includes books. To be honest, your teaching yourself once u start clinicals, see a patient, decide what has to be done, ask your preceptor for guidance if some boggles you , but all in all it has been pretty good experience for me. I chose IWU because it is a Christian school, and that is important to me. Is it hard ? No, I do have to study and what works for me is I read a couple chapters of my text books everday and bought some of my own texts which my preceptors have recommended likea good derm book. tuition is around 20 K and I think dollar for dollar it is money well spent. I feared the stats class, but my undergrad stats class was harder, maybe because I had it already, I am working 24 hours a week, and doing military duty, I do find I have some xtra time on my hands to workout, keep the house clean etc, im not a great time manager, i imagine you could work 3 12 hr shifts on nights and weekends but be majorly stressed out.. so i decided to just do 24 hrs a week and suck it up a bit.. Good luck in your adult np PROGRAM

Thanks for the info, I appreciate it. Why do you have to leave the Indianapolis area for clinical? IU is raising their tuition and it is as much as Ind Wes next year. I am thinking of applying at Ind Wes or U of I instead....

I lucked out and got 3 preceptors so far for my clinical portion of class, the problem is alot of facilities and MDs and NPs that take preceptors get bottled down with students from the medical school, the PA program here and the 3 different FNP programs here.. IU, U of I and IWU. some members of my class going doing clinicals in anderson and south of greenwood. I think U of I and IWU pretty much cost the same. U might want to call and ask if U of I arranges clinicals for its FNP students or not. I am not sure.

U of I is $520/credit hour and it a traditional 16-week semester in-class format. That is out for me. I guess I have a lot of thinking to do about Ind Wes v. IU. IU is raising their grad tuition to $425/hour.

Thanks for the info!
